L-Violet
The Statue of Liberty has always represented more to me than a monument. She carries layers of hope, struggle, freedom, belonging, and the promise of a new beginning. In the Liberty Series, I take this instantly recognizable symbol and break it apart, rebuilding it through hundreds of individually stamped squares on a deeply textured surface.
From across the room, L-Violet gathers those fragments into the familiar silhouette of the Statue of Liberty. Come closer, and the image begins to dissolve. Individual squares, ridges, breaks, and variations in the surface reveal themselves, asking you to slow down and look again. The painting changes with your distance - and with your attention.
L-Violet gives this interpretation of the Statue of Liberty a particularly introspective character. Often associated with reflection, imagination, transformation, and individuality, violet invites us to look beyond the obvious and consider what freedom means on a more personal level.
Perhaps that is what makes the Statue of Liberty such a lasting symbol: we each bring our own history, hopes, memories, and understanding to her. What she represents to one person may be entirely different from what she represents to another.
Living with L-Violet is an invitation to keep looking - to discover something familiar from a distance, something unexpected up close, and perhaps something of your own story in between.
L-Violet is the first of six paintings in the Liberty Series, each exploring the same enduring symbol through a different color and emotional perspective.
*Please note that this piece is part of an ongoing exhibition and it has to stay on display until 12/30/2026.
