Alabaster Cities

$600.00

This painting was inspired by a verse from the poem “Pikes Peak”, written by Katharine Lee Bates in 1893, later set to music and better known as America the Beautiful.
Bates penned these words during a cross-country train journey from Massachusetts to Colorado, capturing her impressions of the nation’s varied landscapes and bustling cities. Along the way, she passed through Chicago and witnessed the World’s Columbian Exposition. The verse I’m referring to is:

"Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!"

In this painting, I use a textured surface to suggest the American flag in a simplified form, created with a thick application of modeling paste. Over it, I’ve stamped an abstracted section of the Chicago skyline.

Medium: Acrylic Paint with Modeling Paste
Base: Stretched Canvas
Size: 20” x 20” x 1.5”
